I made a recent booking for an Indo Canadian bus and I made the ticket booking online and at the time of booking the seats were empty. When I arrived at the bus the seats were all full, so it is highly recommened that you prebook your tickets so that you get a seat and your desired one.

Of course it is a good idea, the hill station is close by and in fact only two hours away from Vaishno Devi. Taking a taxi would be fine, but just for information I would like to let you know that there are buses which go from Vaishno Devi to Patnitop as well. Enjoy your trip.

It would really depend on the frequency of the buses, if they are regular then you can easily get a bus if not then your own transport would be better. It would be best to get the booking done from the hotel you will be staying at.
