If you are in Delhi for an extensive stay, it is worthwhile to get outside the city and check out some of the other sights. The city is interesting in its own right but taking a break for a more natural setting can really nurture the soul. Here are just a few destinations that would make a fantastic weekend getaway from Delhi.

    Naukuchiatal

This 175 foot deep lake is about 5 and a half hours from Delhi. The area is a hill station surrounded by greenery and makes the perfect place for picnics and adventure sports. Try paragliding and parasailing or take the laid back route and charter a yacht or spend the day fishing. You can go trekking in the mountains, watch for wildlife, visit the “seven lakes” or search for temples that are scattered around the area.

    Bikaner

Around 7 hours from Delhi is Bikaner, a city and desert oasis. This place is great for history lovers as visitors can spend the day at a fort from the 1500’s, which was once home to the royal family. Make sure to visit the camel breeding center and sample the camel’s milk ice cream and get up close and personal with one of the big guys on a camel safari through the desert.

    Agra

The famous Taj Mahal is about 200 kilometers from Delhi in the city of Agra. This town is also home to the Agra Fort which is yet another UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through the perfectly crafted gardens and make sure to visit the temples, especially the intricate art work of Sikandra tomb. The cuisine around the city is quite renowned and joining a food tour is highly recommended.

    Jaipur

Known as the “pink city” for its colorful buildings, Jaipur is under a four hour trip from Delhi. This city is a popular tourist destination amongst those living in India as it is teeming with significant temples, ancient forts and grand palaces. Spend an afternoon wandering from monument to lush gardens and the evening watching a performance in the theater. Wander the old streets and check out the bazaar to take home some handicrafts and souvenirs.

    Rishikesh

Located about 4 and a half hours from Delhi, Rishikesh is the perfect getaway for those looking for nature, adventure and action. Visit the intricate ashrams such as Gita Bhavan and the Swarg Ashram or sit on the banks of the river and watch the thousands of bathers in the Triveni Ghat. This spiritual town often draws individuals looking to study yoga, meditation and Hindu philosophy, so you can check in to one of these Ashrams yourself for a little soothing education. Take a spiritual dip in the famous Ganges river or opt for a little more action by whitewater rafting. This place is a mecca for outdoor sports and you have the options to kayak, cliff jump, rock climb, rappel, bungee jump and trek at your fingertips.

A stay in Delhi is a fantastic experience but getting out into the nature and the historic cities is what will really bring you a well-rounded journey in India. Choose a place that best suits your needs and hit the road, there is plenty to discover.
