I live in Mumbai and would like to travel to Coorg in December. My initial plans are to travel by train, but I am also open to other modes of transport if it is easier than traveling by train.

If traveling by train is a good option I would like to know what arrival destination would I choose to reach Coorg, Mangalore or Mysore?

From either Mangalore or Mysore, how would I be able to reach Coorg?

Would taking a flight be a better option than a train? Which airport is nearest to Coorg?

Hello there, welcome to the forum!

So here are your transportation options from Mumbai to Coorg:

    1. By Train - I'll start with this one since you asked about it first as well. The nearest railway station to Coorg is the Mysore City Junction Railway Station. It is about 106 kilometres away from Coorg. So your route would be:
    • Mumbai > Train to Mysore > Bus to Coorg/Madikeri.
From Mumbai to Mysore, there's only one train for this route:
    • Sharavathi Express Train No. 11035 - This train departs during Thursdays from Dadar Central at 21:30. It arrives in Mysore City Junction at 21:40, the next day. So journey duration is around one day or more.
From Mysore City Junction, you can board a bus going to Coorg/Madikeri. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates several buses plying this route. Here are some information about them:
    • KSRTC (Airavat Bus) - They have two timings, one departs at 22:14 and the other departs at 23:01. They then arrive in Mangalore at around 1:00 and 1:45. So you need to be dropped off along the way to Coorg since the buses have a main destination other than Coorg. Fare is around Rs. 272 per passenger.
    • KSRTC (Karnataka Sarige Bus) - They have different timings for these buses: 00:00, 4:30, 6:31, 7:00, 8:29, 8:45, 12:30, 13:15, 15:30, 17:00, 19:00 and 22:00. These buses also have different destinations although some of them arrive mainly at Madikeri. Fare is around Rs. 112 per passenger.
    • KSRTC (Rajahamsa Executive Bus) - They have different timings for these buses: 11:30, 12:30, 21:30 and 23:35. These buses either have Mangalore or Madikeri as their destinations. Fare is around Rs. 178 per passenger.
These buses depart from the Mysore KSRTC Bus Stand in Mofussil. You need to be dropped off at Coorg along the way, since it comes first before Madikeri or Mangalore. So make sure you ask the bus driver to drop you off at Coorg along the way.

Mangalore is a good option as well since it has more trains plying from Mumbai. Your route would be:
    • Mumbai > Train to Mangalore > Bus to Coorg/Madikeri.
Here are some train timings from Mumbai to Mangalore:
    • Netravati Express Train No. 16345 - This train departs daily from Thane at 12:05. It arrives in Mangalore Junction at 5:55.
    • Matsyagandha Express Train No. 12619 - This train departs daily from Thane at 15:45. It arrives in Mangalore Junction at 10:25.
    • Mangalore Express Train No. 12133 - This train departs daily from Mumbai at 22:00. It arrives in Mangalore Junction at 15:15.
    • Kochuveli Garib Rath Train No. 12201 - This train departs during Mondays and Fridays from Thane at 17:20. It arrives in Mangalore Junction at 10:25.
    • Dadar Tirunelveli Express Train No. 22629 - This train departs during Fridays from Thane at 21:05. It arrives in Mangalore Junction at 14:25.
Journey duration is around 17 hours to 21 hours. From the Mangalore Junction, Coorg is about 164 kilometres away. You can also board a bus going to Mysore or Bangalore and you can be dropped off at Coorg along the way. These buses are also operated by KSRTC:
    • KSRTC (Airavat Bus) - This bus departs from Mangalore at 15:31 and arrives in Mysore at around 19:00. Fare is at Rs. 295 per passenger.
    • KSRTC (Karnataka Sarige Bus) - These buses depart from Mangalore at 16:30 and 18:30. They then arrive in Bangalore at around 20:30 and 22:30. Fare is at Rs. 140 per passenger.
    • KSRTC (Rajahamsa Executive Bus) - This bus departs from Mangalore at 14:00 and arrives in Mysore at around 18:30. Fare is at Rs. 221 per passenger.
These buses depart from the Mangalore KSRTC Bus Stand in Bejai. Since they have different destinations, you need to be dropped off at Coorg so you need to ask the driver to look out for you.

    2. By Bus - Journey by bus can be very long and there are no direct buses from Mumbai to Coorg. However, there are direct buses from Mumbai to Mangalore. So your route can be:
    • Mumbai > Bus to Mangalore > Bus to Coorg.
Here are some private bus operators from Mumbai to Mangalore:
    • Canara Pinto Travels (Volvo AC Multi-Axle Bus) - These buses depart from Mumbai at 12:30 pm, 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. They arrive in Mangalore at around 6:30 am, 10:30 am and 11:30 am. Fare is at Rs. 1,000 per passenger.
    • VRL Travels (Volvo AC Multi-Axle Bus) - These buses depart from Mumbai at 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm. They arrive in Mangalore at around 6:15 am, 7:15 am and 10:15 am. Fare is at Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,600 per passenger.
    • Anand Travel (Volvo AC Multi-Axle Bus) - This bus departs from Mumbai at 12:15 pm. It arrives in Mangalore at around 6:30 am. Fare is at Rs. 1,000 per passenger.
Journey duration is around 20 hours or so. Then, from Mangalore, you have the same options for buses as mentioned above.

    3. By Air - The nearest airport to Coorg is in Mysore but this airport does not receive commercial flights anymore. So your next best option is the Mangalore Airport, about 160 kilometres away from Coorg. Here are some flights from Mumbai to Mangalore:

    Jet Airways
    • 9W 334 - This departs from Mumbai at 21:00 and arrives in Mangalore at around 22:25. Fare is at Rs. 3,732 per passenger.
    • 9W 415 - This departs from Mumbai at 14:55 and arrives in Mangalore at around 7:50. Fare is at Rs. 9,164 per passenger.
    • 9W 335 - This departs from Mumbai at 16:00 and arrives in Mangalore at around 7:50. Fare is at Rs. 9,164 per passenger.
    • 9W 7206 - This departs from Mumbai at 17:25 and arrives in Mangalore at around 7:50. Fare is at Rs. 9,164 per passenger.
From the Mangalore Airport, the Mangalore KSRTC Bus Stand is about 16 kilometres away. So you need to ride a taxi or bus to reach the bus stand from the airport. Then, you have the same options for buses as posted above. Or you can directly ride a taxi to reach Coorg from the airport. Fare for taxi would be around Rs. 2,850 to Rs. 3,700.

    So in summary:
    • Most convenient option - Airplane to Mangalore > Taxi to Coorg
    • Least expensive option - Train/Bus
    • Fastest option - Airplane/Taxi
    • Most scenic - Train/Bus
    I hope this helps you!:)
