I read an article today that India has experienced a 4.5% growth in tourist arrivals and earned nearly US$13 billion in foreign exchange via tourism during January and August of this year.

There were a total of just over 5 million tourist arrivals. The article said Bangladesh topped the list of tourist arrivals with 15.79%, followed by the United States (12.52%) and United Kingdom (9.71%).

While some other tourism markets are dying off, India's seems to be booming - do you have any ideas why this could be the case?

I think one of the major factors affecting this is the attitude of the current Government under the able Prime Ministership of Mr.Narendra Modi. He has taken a lot of innovative measures to bring India in to the main frame. Security for women travelers have been beefed up keeping in mind the rising atrocities against women and kids all over the world. He is making India the safest place for a foreigner. He has also launched a special drive to keep Indian cities and villages clean. Special focus is being given on digitalizing India in years to come.

I reckon you are referring to an old article
    maybe the one above.
I did another painstaking search to find what was the best comparative study and it paid off with this article

India will continue to experience a rise in travelers at least for the next couple of years.Efforts are being made to make a tourist friendly country, all the more.
Tourists to India will sure have a great time touring,in a couple of years.A whole new transcended level of safety, ease of roaming etc.

It was actually an article that was Malaysian based! I read it online, but here's the link if you want to see it - it's only a couple of days old :)

Maybe the stats never took a up or down from what was,a couple of years back.(2013)
Either way we still have information and nothing went down the drain ;)

Also another query that just popped out. What makes USA a fascinating place for tourists ?
Infrastructure.yes, but apart from that ? Fun quotient ? Places to See ?

If that's the case why is UAE not on the list ?

To be honest I think people like visiting the USA because they see so much of it in movies! ;)

There are lots of great places here in the states don't get me wrong. But I've traveled to a lot of countries and there's beautiful and interesting fun places all over the world! The USA is not the only place for fun destinations!

Ahh movies, maybe they go just to show off then ?
or maybe lets leave it at perception.Even recently i checked an article on best travel destinations in the world.New york popped up as the 11th.
Some people here in India make it their life time goal to visit America at least once and should you be back after a visit,it becomes a hot story in the colony.I reckon its pride,at least in the country where I stay.

Yeah I honestly think that sometimes it is just for bragging rights! I have been to New York and it was cool to see some of the sights but it definitely wasn't the most interesting city I've ever visited or anything!

India is no longer seen as the backward third world country. It is an integral part of the world economy, being top three with growth along with USA and Japan. It is becoming more modern while holding onto old values which interest many. Many of the sites which people go to see are religious so the chance of monuments and other buildings being removed is very slim so there will always be various things to to see.
