Is pork meat common or easy to find in India? One of my friends is planning to travel through India for quite a long time and he was wondering if there was a place where he would have bacon for breakfast for example every once in a while. Has anyone ever had pork in India?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Although most of the locals in India are vegetarians, you won't have a problem finding pork meat in many places. In fact, some regions in India have pork specialties, like:
    • Doh Nei Long in Meghalaya. A simple pork dish, smoked pork is slathered with gravy and paired with rice.
    • Kodava Pandi Curry in Coorg. A curry dish with slices of meat combined with tamarind and pepper.
    • Pork Laithuan in Mangalore. A roasted pig with stuffed bread, raisins, nuts, onions and other spices.
    • Pork Vindaloo in Goa. Pork flavoured with vinegar, chili and garlic. It is best paired with Kadak Pao or Poi.
    • Pork Patot Diya in Naga. This is pork steamed in banana leaves.
Likewise, it's not unusual to find pork dishes in restaurants. There are also fast food chains in India which do serve pork meat. Some restaurants serving pork in Delhi are:
    • Monkey Bar. This is located in: Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, Delhi. Guests love their Pork Ribs and Pandi Curry.
    • Yeti - The Himalayan Kitchen. This is located in: 2nd Floor, 50A, Hauz Khas Village (Hauz Khas), New Delhi, Delhi. Try out their Tibet Style Fried Pork.
    • TGI Friday's. This is located in: 314-316, 2nd Flr., DLF Place Mall, Saket (DLF Place Saket), New Delhi, Delhi. This is a Western restaurant serving pork dishes. You can find burgers and even bacon here.
    • Cafe Delhi Heights. This is located in: Ambience Mall, New Delhi, Delhi. Their hamburgers are best sellers as well as their pork sausages.
    Here are some in Mumbai:
    • Indigo Delhi. They are located in: Pali Hill (Bandra), Mumbai, Maharashtra. Best known for their Pork Ribs.
    • Jim-me's Kitchen. They are located in: 12, St. Peter road (off Hill road), Bandra West, Maharashtra. Their specialty is there Pork Ribs with Barbecue Sauce.
    Even in Jaipur:
    • Peshawri. Located in: ITC Rajputana Hotel, Palace Road, Gopalbari, Jaipur. They have North Indian cuisine and a variety of pork dishes.
    • Okra. Located in: Jaipur Marriott Hotel, Ashram Marg, Near Jawahar Circle, Tonk Road, Jaipur. They have a variety of cuisines: North Indian, Italian and Asian. They also have some pork dishes you can choose from.
There you go! If you could tell us where in India your friend will be traveling to, then we can give recommendations of restaurant serving pork in that place.

    I hope this helps!

Pork isn't common in India because most of the people in India who eat meat are Muslims and they don't eat Pork. But it isn't actually as rare as you might think. I've had bacon for breakfast several times and it isn't that hard to find in most large Indian cities. Pork in Goa is very easy to find. In Kalimpong and Sikkim there's this stuff served at restaurants called Chilli Pork that is pretty fantastic.

There is yet another dish called Pork Bafath. This is cooked using a lot of onions and all the green masala such as garlic and green chillies and ginger. The pork is cut into pieces and cooked along with the bafat masala powder that is available in shops and the chopped green ingredients . The condiments used are bay leaf, cloves and cinnamon sticks. Once the pork is cooked enough vinegar and salt is added. When this is being cooked the whole house gets the aroma and this aroma serves as a great appetisers. :)
It tastes better with days. Nothing like cooking in a earthenware pot porkbafat.jpg
