When should you not opt for 5 star hotels

Not many go for 5 star hotels since they are pretty expensive. But those who can afford should think twice before taking the plunge.
If one spends a lot of time in 5 star hotels enjoying their ambiance then it is worth spending on those hotels. But for those tourists that only come to sleep it is a sheer waste of money.
Package holidays have hotels that are great but tourists never get to enjoy them except to sleep and have their spread out breakfast.
On one such holiday we decided to skip a sightseeing event and spent a full day at this beautiful hotel in Melbourne.
We had a relaxed bath which otherwise is always done in a hurry. Watched a good movie.Had a siesta in the sprawling bedroom. Walked around the hotel, breathing in the exteriors with well kept gardens.
What is your view on this?

It all depends on one's budget, if one can afford it then they would still opt for a 5-star hotel even if it was for sleeping. To be honest, sleep is important as well, especially if you're going to be out all day and want to come back to your hotel room for a good nights sleep and want a decent bed than a 5 star is worth it.
Other things that matter are the service, ambiance of the room, the bathroom which one can enjoy even when they come back from being outside during the day.

Depending on certain destinations, you are also able to find decent enough hotels that are 3 or 4 stars which match up to the 5-star hotels as well, so it depends on your location and research you do in finding a hotel.

A 3 star would certainly ensure good sleep if that is what a hotel is used for by those who are out most of the time. I am particularly referring to those who are out there on business. But as you have rightly said a 5 star comfort would be ideal for a family holiday.
