I am asking this because my friend absolutely loves books that focus on India and its people and culture. Her birthday is coming up soon, so I thought this would be a great gift. And since I mainly only read horrors and crime, my knowledge of this things is quite low. Have you read any Indian books? What is your favorite Indian book? What do you think about this books and how do you compare them to any other book that doesn't completely focus on India?

One that I loved was The Splendor of Silence by Indu Sundaresan. It's a bit of a romance-y type book but if your friend likes books like that I'd recommend it. Of course there is a romance element to the story but it's not shallow or anything, and if she likes books on India and the culture/people then I think she'd like it.
