My husband and I require some help in finding out when the best time to visit Munnar is?

We both want to see the views of the place and so would like the skies to be clear, and would rather avoid the foggy season.

We don't much too much of the heat but do not want to be in temperatures exceeding 28c.

Hello, @Aditi! Welcome to the forum!

Munnar has a subtropical highland climate. Due to its higher location, the climate in Munnar is cooler and milder than the lower lying plains. It is typically an all-year round destination but here's a little breakdown of the seasons in Munnar:

    1. Winter Season - This is between October to February. Temperatures during this time range between 13°C to 19°C. Sometimes, during the colder months of December and January, temperatures can even drop to 5°C or even lower than this. This is also one of the peak tourist seasons in Munnar. From mid-December to January though, fogs can be quite thick so you won't enjoy much of the viewpoints in Munnar. So if you could schedule your trip from October to the first week of December, do so. Also, carry your heavy woollens, scarves and other winter paraphernalia when visiting during this time. Sightseeing is quite enjoyable too as the pleasant climate continues on. Some opt to do some adventure activities like trekking, rock climbing and rappelling which are possible since Munnar isn't hit by heavy snow unlike other hill stations in the country.
    • Best for - People who enjoy the cold weather, people into adventure activities and people who would just like to do some sightseeing in the town.
    • Must bring - Woollen clothes, socks, scarves, jackets and other winter paraphernalia.
    • Downside - High hotel rates, crowds and the foggy surroundings.
    2. Summer Season - This is between March to June. Temperatures during this time range between 20°C to 23°C. Sometimes, during the months of April and May, temperatures can go as high as 25°C. So even in summer season, the climate in Munnar is quite cool and refreshing. Hence, many tourists from the plains seek some relief from the heat by going to hill stations like Munnar. So you can consider this as one of the peak tourist seasons here as well. The good thing about this season is that it is not foggy unlike the winter season. Flowers are in full bloom during this time and waterfalls are in their sparkling blue beauty. Sightseeing won't be difficult as well due to the pleasant weather. Do bring some light woollen clothes as night time can be quite chilly.
    • Best for - People who enjoy sightseeing and people who doesn't like the cold weather as much.
    • Must bring - Light woollen clothes and sunscreen.
    • Downside - High hotel rates and crowds.
    3. Monsoon Season - This between July to September. Temperatures during this time range between 19°C to 21°C. Sometimes, temperatures can also go below zero. This is considered the off-peak tourist season in Munnar. However, it is advisable to avoid travelling in the region during the day time as nights can be misty or foggy. Do avoid the end of June and beginning of July when the region is hit by most rain. The good thing about this season is that the waterfalls become more alive as they are fed by the monsoon rains. Rates for hotels are also cheaper since not many tourists flock to the region. Sightseeing is still possible but be prepared to be drenched in rain. Also, leeches are quite common during this season so do wear tight pants and long-sleeved shirts. Also carry some salt water with you.
    • Best for - People who love greenery and people who are budget travellers.
    • Must bring - Rain paraphernalia like umbrella, cap and raincoat.
    • Downside - Moderate to heavy rains and leeches.
There you go. It seems like that for you, the best season would be summer when the skies are clear and you can enjoy Munnar and what it has to offer. If you'd like to visit during the winter season, then schedule your trip before the foggy skies begins. So make sure you have booked a hotel for October to early December. This way, you can avoid the foggy skies of Munnar.

    I hope this helps!
