There are six of us going on the Bhimashankar trek and want to go via Shidi Ghat. It would be great to get some information about the trek, the difficulty of the trek, and information on whether any permits are required.

Happy trekking to all the trekkers.

    Hi Kanika,

The trek is considered to be moderately difficult and can be completed in a day. Here are some details about the trek:

Starting point: Khandas village, which is located about 70 km from Pune.

Trek distance: The trek is approximately 6 km long and takes around 3-4 hours to complete.

Trek difficulty: The trek is considered to be moderately difficult and involves a steep climb up the Shidi Ghat. The route can be slippery during the monsoon season, so it's essential to be careful while climbing.

Route: The trek starts from Khandas village and goes through dense forests, streams, and waterfalls. The trail leads to the Shidi Ghat, which is a steep climb consisting of rock-cut steps and ladders. After reaching the top of the ghat, the trail becomes relatively easy and leads to the Bhimashankar Temple, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Best time to visit: The best time to trek to Bhimashankar via Shidi Ghat is from June to February. The monsoon season from June to September is considered to be the best time to witness the lush greenery and waterfalls along the trail.

Permits: No permits are required for the trek, but it's essential to carry a valid ID proof while trekking.

As like any other trek, make sure you have enough water and snacks.

The Bhimashankar Trek is a popular pilgrimage and hiking route located near Pune, Maharashtra, India. It leads to the Jyotirlinga shrine of Lord Shiva, located amidst the Sahyadri mountains.

There are two main routes to the temple - Shidi Ghat and Ganesh Ghat.

    Shidi Ghat
    • Distance: Approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles)
    • Difficulty: Moderate to difficult. The trail involves steep climbs, some rock patches, and several ladders. A good level of fitness is recommended.
    • Permits: No permits are required for the Bhimashankar trek via Shidi Ghat. However, it's a good idea to inform a local guide or forest official about your planned trek, especially if you are a large group.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of the Shidi Ghat route:

    • The trek starts from the village of Khandas near Karjat.
    • The initial part of the trail is a gentle ascent through forest cover.
    • You will then come across a small waterfall and a series of steps leading to a plateau.
    • The trail then gets steeper and more challenging, with several rock patches and three ladders to climb.
    • There are also sections with loose gravel, so proper footwear is essential.
    • After the ladders, the trail becomes more moderate and takes you to the temple complex.

While the Shidi Ghat route is shorter than the Ganesh Ghat route, it is considered more challenging due to the steeper climbs and ladders. If you and your group are new to trekking or have concerns about fitness levels, the Ganesh Ghat route might be a better option.

Here are some additional tips for planning your Bhimashankar trek via Shidi Ghat:
    • Carry plenty of water: As there are no water sources on the trail, it's essential to carry enough water for the entire trek. At least 2-3 liters per person is recommended.
    • Wear proper shoes: Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential for the rocky terrain and uneven paths.
    • Start early: It's best to start the trek early in the morning to avoid the heat, especially during the summer months.
    • Be prepared for the weather: The weather in the Sahyadris can be unpredictable. Carry rain gear and sunscreen, depending on the forecast.
Respect the environment: Pack out all your trash and avoid littering on the trail.

I hope this information helps you and your group plan a successful and enjoyable Bhimashankar trek via Shidi Ghat! Happy Trekking!
