I am from Delhi and will be in Mumbai soon. One of the places I would love to visit is the film city in Mumbai, but I am not too sure whether this is open to the general public and if so how can I visit the film city Mumbai?

Are there any special passes or permissions required?

Hi, @Manjula! Welcome to the forum!

Although the Mumbai Film City has been closed to the public for a long time, it was finally opened for tourists in the year 2014. Tours to the film city are organised by the Maharashtra State Government's Tourism Board. So the best way to tour the film city is through the organised tours prepared by the government. There are different tours that are available:

    1. Mumbai Film City Tour - This tour is available in both Hindi and English. You get to tour the film city along with the certain locations and sets like the lake reserve garden, court, church, bridge and helipad temple. A brief history of Bollywood would also be discussed to the guests. This package includes:
    • Operates on a daily basis
    • Tour to certain locations and sets
    • Guide to discuss the history of Bollywood
    • Drop off at the Film City Entrance Gate
Rates for this package differ for Indians and foreigners:
    • Indians - Rs. 599 per individual
    • Foreigners - Rs. 3,000 per individual
The downside with this tour is that you're not allowed to get off the bus. You can only get off the bus at the canteen, when it's time for your break. You are also not allowed to photograph the actors, in case there are any, since this can distract them. The timings for the tour are:
    • 12:10 pm to 2:10 pm
    • 2:20 pm to 4:20 pm
    • 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm
    2. Dream Tour - This tour takes you through the back stage of the films. You get to experience post-production activities, recording your voice in a voice studio, singing in a singing studio and also dubbing over famous Bollywood scenes. You would also get a guide for this one. Here are some of the inclusions of the package:
    • Operates on a daily basis
    • Tour to post production activities
    • Guide to discuss the history of post production
    • Experience post production activities
Rates for this package differ for Indians and foreigners:
    • Indians - Rs. 489 per individual
    • Foreigners - Rs. 1,500 per individual
This is a great package for those who want to know what goes on beyond the screens of your television and theatres. You won't be able to spot actors but you'd know more about the behind the scene activities. Here are the timings for this package:
    • 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
    • 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
    • 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
    3. Live Show Tour - This tour allows you to go into a live shooting set for a television show. This way, you get to see actual actors while they work on the set. You have the opportunity as well to have your picture taken with the actor and visit his or her make-up room, if they allow it. The package includes:
    • Operates on a daily basis
    • An hour and 30 minutes of a guided tour
    • Visit to a live shooting set
    • Opportunity to see a real actor and have your picture taken with him or her
Rates for this package differ for Indians and foreigners:
    • Indians - Rs. 1,260 per individual
    • Foreigners - Rs. 2,500 per individual
So if you'd like to actually see a real actor, this is the best package for you. Here are the timings for this package:
    • 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
    • 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
    4. Combination Tour - This package includes both the Mumbai Film City Tour and the Dream Tour. So you get to experience both the film city as well as the post production activities. Inclusions are:
    • Operates on a daily basis
    • Tour to certain locations and sets
    • Guide to discuss the history of Bollywood
    • Tour to post production activities
    • Guide to discuss the history of post production
    • Experience post production activities
    Rate for this package is:
    • Indians - Rs. 1,099 per individual
    The timings are the following:
    • 12:10 pm to 2:10 pm and 2:20 pm to 4:20 pm (Film City Tour)
    • 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm (Dream Tour)
Here are some of the contact details for the Mumbai Film City Tours:
    • Contact number - +91 7738007224
There's also a few government-approved tour companies, one of which is the Bollywood Tours. Here is one of their packages:

    1. Half Day Bollywood Tour - This package includes viewing a live shooting studio, experiencing post production activities, visiting a dance hall and a live Bollywood dance show. The lunch for the day is already included in the package as well. Here are the inclusions in a nutshell:
    • Operates on a daily basis
    • Visiting a live shooting studio and seeing live actors
    • Experiencing post production activities
    • Visit to the dance hall
    • A live Bollywood dance show
    • Lunch
The tariff for this package is Rs. 6,000 per individual. The timings for the tour are:
    • 9:30 am
    • 10:00 am
    • 10:30 am
    • 11:00 am
    • 2:00 pm
    • 2:30 pm
    • 3:00 pm
    • 4:00 pm
    • 5:00 pm
Here are some of the contact details for the Bollywood Tours:
    • Contact number - 91 2265282097
So there you go, you can opt for the Mumbai Film City Tours or through government-approved agencies. You can obtain entry to the film city this way, albeit with a fee. I hope this helps you.

Yes, Film City Mumbai, also known as Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, is open to the general public for tours. However, you cannot just walk in; you need to book a guided tour in advance. There are different tour packages available, and you can choose the one that best suits your interests and budget.

Here's how you can visit Film City Mumbai:

    • Book a guided tour: You can book a guided tour online through authorized vendors or by contacting the Film City authorities directly.
    • Choose a tour package: There are different tour packages available, ranging from basic tours of the film sets to more comprehensive experiences that include watching live shoots, meeting actors, and even trying on costumes.
    • Get permission: While booking the tour, you'll get the necessary permission to enter the film city.
Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

    • Photography: Photography is usually not allowed inside the shooting areas, but you can take pictures in designated areas.
    • Carry ID: You will need to carry a valid ID proof, such as a passport or driver's license, while on the tour.
