I need to get a new passport, and this will be my first passport. I do not wish to go and wait in queues and in the crowd to get my application processed and was wondering whether we can apply for a passport online, which would make it much easier for me.

Please provide details on how to apply for passport online. The details required are, the site to apply for the passport from, time it takes, documents required, etc.

Hello there, welcome to the forum!

Applying for an Indian passport online is not only convenient, it is also very efficient. Your time is saved as you won't need to queue anymore and at the same time, there is less stress for you. You won't even need to hire an agent to do the process for you, saving you some money along the way. Follow the steps below in applying for an Indian passport online:

Procedures for Applying for Indian Passport Online
    • Go to the Passport Seva website. At the left side of the website, you would see a couple of boxes, click on the New User? Register Now button, it is the colour orange box.
    • You would then be redirected to a registration form that you have to fill out completely. Tick the box Passport Office and select the closest branch to you.
    • Fill in the other information like your first name, surname and date of birth. Make sure that you input a working email address as this is necessary to receive your login details. Tick the box Yes, if you'd like your email address to be the same as your login ID or tick the box No, if you would like a separate login ID.
    • Enter the remaining details and then input the required captcha. Once done, your login details and activation link would be sent to your email address. Click on the link to activate your new account.
    • Login with your details and click on the Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport link.
    • Now you have two options, you can either download the e-Form then fill it out offline or complete the application form online. Both ways work though the first option is more convenient, especially if you have an internet connection that goes wary at times.
    • If you have chosen the first option, download the e-Form and complete it. Once done, click the Validate and Save button and upload the XML file in the Upload e-Form link.
    • If you have chosen the second option, simply fill out the application form online and click on the Submit button once done.
    • Under the View Saved/Submitted Applications button, click on the Pay and Schedule Appointment link. You can choose between credit card, debit card, internet banking or bank deposit for the payment of your application. You can click on the Book an Appointment button and schedule your appointment.
    • Once done with the booking and payment (Rs. 1,500), you can print your Application Reference Number. Carry this along with the other required documents on the day of your appointment.
On the day of your scheduled appointment, make sure that you bring these required documents:

Documents Required for Indian Passport Application
    • Proof of address (ration card, utility bill, income tax assessment order, election card, gas connection bill or spouse's passport copy)
    • Proof of date of birth (birth certificate issued by a municipal authority or school leaving certificate)
    • Passport application form duly completed with signature and photograph
    • Printed application reference number
Bring at least two self-attested photocopies of these documents as well. Make sure you reach the required office at least 30 minutes before your schedule. Here are the procedures you will go through on the day of your appointment:

    Procedures for Passport Appointment Schedule
    • Get a token number and wait for it to be called. At Counter A, you would need to show your documents along with the self-attested photocopies.
    • At Counter B, your biometrics would be taken, which include finger prints taking and also taking of your picture. Once done, your details would be confirmed.
    • At Counter C, your documents would be verified once again and you would be given a Final Acknowledgement Receipt. Keep this safely as this is necessary for obtaining your passport.
After a few weeks, two to three maximum, you would receive an email about your police verification. If you are invited for a police verification, go to the required police headquarters and bring all your documents along with their photocopies. You would also need two witnesses's signature, address and full names. Once you're cleared with the police verification, you would again be invited, this time for a local intelligence unit verification. This is just a simple interview about your occupation and family. Once you are cleared with this again, you are done and you would receive your passport within a month's time to your home address or you can also opt to just pick it up from the office.

    I hope this helps you.:)
