I am currently in Shimla and we are thinking of going to Rohtang Pass, but before we go we need to know whether it is open for tourists or not. If it is open please can someone provide the opening and closing timings.
A quick response would be appreciated as as we only have around 5 days left in Shimla.
    Thanks.

Normally Rohtang Pass is closed during the months of November to May, but dates can change depending on the weather. It is best to ask your hotel to find out about the opening and closing times, so that you get the correct current status.

Rohtang Pass is usually open from May/June months to October/November months. Each year the opening and closing dates vary so for precise dates you should contact Rohtang Pass, contact tourist information centre on +91-1902-252175/253531.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Normally, Rohtang Pass is open from May to October or sometimes, June to November. It really depends on snowfall and whether snow occurs early that year. Rohtang Pass can be quite a dangerous area during the winter season as landslides are prone to happen here. It's not the roads per se that are dangerous but the weather. Unfortunately, it's hard to predict the weather in the region and that's why they just close the pass during winter season as to avoid any accidents to tourists and locals. It's best to ask the authorities or rely on weather reports.

Once it opens in May, you also have to schedule your trip accordingly. Make sure that you don't travel during Tuesdays as Rohtang Pass would be closed by then. They do some repairs and maintenance on the roads leading to and from Rohtang Pass. You won't be able to access it despite having permits.

Another thing you should remember is that they don't accept tourists after 11:00 am. Make sure you are there before that time as it is only accepting visitors from 6:00 am to 11:00 am. You can play and enjoy the snow though all day. But you'd have to leave before 6:00 pm as that's the only time they allow tourists from Rohtang Pass to go to Manali. You can leave anytime between 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Another tip: Make sure you leave early for Rohtang Pass. Traffic here is quite congested and you might find yourself being in the car longer than you expected. A two hour trip can become a five hour one because of the huge number of tourists and vehicles in the area.

    I hope this helps!
