The Hotel Neelam's the Grand is a four-star property in the northern part of Goa. Close to the busiest beaches of Goa, the hotel provides for a within the budget stay option for travellers to the state. With modern facilities yet still having that traditional touch to its design, Hotel Neelam's the Grand aims to cater to the hospitality needs of each and every guest in the property. Initially, the property was owned by Silent Resorts but was acquired by the Neelam Hotels, which is a private company owned by Narayan Rane and his son, Nilesh Rane. All of these buildings are positioned upon a central swimming pool, though not all rooms have pool views. Blending with the vibrant Portuguese homes of Goa, the hotel has this vibrant yellow and peach facade. The reception area is very spacious and even has a high ceiling design. The rooms has a classic colonial charm to them, from the lengthy draping curtains, to the hardwood flooring and regal furnitures. The overall vibe of the property is appealing because of its airy ambience and spirited design.

Rooms in the hotel are spread around the various low-rise buildings positioned upon the central swimming pool. Rooms here have Portuguese interiors but also boast of modern elements. For example, the long curtain draping, the wooden flooring and the colonial-style furnitures can take you back to the bygone era. However, the presence of modern amenities like the television, electronic safe and tea/coffee maker somehow balances the overall aesthetics of the rooms. Most rooms have a terrace too that overlooks either the swimming pool or the busy city.

There are five main room types in the property, namely: Superior Deluxe, Superior Deluxe Pool View, Premium Suite, Honeymoon Suite and Grand Suite. The rates mentioned above include access to the rooms and non-chargeable facilities of the hotel. They also include breakfast for two during your stay in the hotel. You can also access WiFi with these rates already as internet is free of charge in the hotel. And finally, these rates also already include the taxes so there would be no additional charges once you have booked a room from them.

The Superior Deluxe is their most affordable room type. This is a spacious room with its own terrace overlooking the city streets. The colonial charm of the design is visible even in this room type. Certain standout design elements like the lattice like headboard of the bed or the geometric patterns on the tiled flooring add to the room's charm. The Superior Deluxe Pool View has the same features but instead of a city view in the balcony, it has a pool view.

The last three room options are of the suites. These suites are more spacious having their own living room area and a balcony overlooking either the pool or the garden. Again, the Portuguese design dominates in these suites though the aesthetics are mostly minimalistic. The walls are whitewashed with a few framed paintings. The bathroom has its own bathtub slash shower area as well. Of the three, the most expensive is the Grand Suite, so if you want space but lacks budget a bit, opt for either the Premium Suite or Honeymoon Suite.

The hotel has an in-house restaurant named the Pan Global. This restaurant serves mainly North Indian, Continental and Chinese cuisines. There's also an on-site coffee shop. This is also the venue for the buffet spreads of the hotel. The buffet breakfast spread is quite extensive with dishes like Chole, Bhature, Omelette, Pancakes, Oatmeal and many more. Finally, there's also a bar slash lounge where guests can enjoy cocktails and other liquor-based beverages in. There are also LCD televisions here showcasing live sports telecasts for the sports enthusiasts.

KFC, a well-known fast food chain, is merely two minutes away from the hotel. Sai Kripa and Punjabi Classic both serve North Indian dishes but the former specialises mainly in vegetarian fares. Both are under five minutes of walking away from the hotel. There are many more dining options within 5 to 10 minutes of walking away from the hotel.

There's a central swimming pool with separate areas for children and adults. The swimming pool is huge with surrounding trees and plants. There are also sun loungers and parasols for the use of guests. There's also an on-site spa with licensed massage therapists offering massages and treatments. For the health buffs, there's a fully operational gym with the usual amenities like treadmill and weights. There's also a small yoga centre where guests can be one with their inner self. Lift is only available in the Wing D of the property, though all buildings don't exceed three floors.

There's a business centre too, with amenities like computers and printers, as well as fax machines. Internet is widely available in the hotel but signal can be weak in some far areas. For special events or even business meetings, the hotel has four halls that can be rented out. These halls can be combined for a huge events centre as well. With state of the art equipments like audio visual projectors and screens, business travellers won't need to worry about their special meetings with prospective clients.

Services offered by the hotel are room service, laundry, dry cleaning and ironing, all for additional charges. They also have airport shuttle transfers for staying guests, but you need to avail of their minimum stay requirement for this or at least request for it two days in advance. What is the Verdict?

If you want to stay in the most happening area of Goa, Hotel Neelam's the Grand is a good choice. It is located quite at the centre but away from the noisy areas of Tito's Lane and Baga. Its location is just perfect for couples or families who might want to spend a few days exploring the markets of Goa or maybe the busier restaurants around the region. Its rates truly justify its location, though facilities and amenities won't be as top notch as compared to other four-star properties. Do book a pool-facing room, since the hotel doesn't have any sea-facing room as it is located further from the beach.
