I'm from the USA and along with my in-laws, we are all in India in our home town. We have just noticed yesterday that my father in laws passport has expired.

I would like some help in knowing how to renew the expired passport, what is the procedure in India?

We still have around 4 weeks left in India so I would think that's enough time to get a new passport.

To renew an expired Indian passport, you will need to follow these steps:

    1. Visit the Passport Seva website: Start by visiting the Passport Seva website (www.portal2.passportindia.gov.in/). Register yourself as a new user if you haven't already, and then log in to your account.

    2. Select the "Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport" option: Once you're logged in, select the "Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport" option on the homepage.

    3. Fill out the application form: Fill out the application form with the necessary details, such as your personal information, address, and passport details. Make sure to provide accurate and up-to-date information.

    4. Schedule an appointment: After filling out the form, you will need to schedule an appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Regional Passport Office (RPO) to submit your application and supporting documents.

    5. Pay the application fee: The next step is to pay the application fee, which can be done online through the Passport Seva website. The fee varies depending on the type of passport and the number of pages.

    6. Gather the required documents: Gather all the necessary documents required for the passport renewal, such as the old/expired passport, passport size photographs, address proof, and any other documents requested by the PSK/RPO.

    7. Visit the PSK/RPO: On the day of your appointment, visit the PSK/RPO with all the required documents. The passport officer will verify your documents and process your application.

    8. Track the status of your application: You can track the status of your application online through the Passport Seva website. Once your application is processed, you will receive an SMS/email notifying you of the same.
It is important to note that the above steps may vary slightly depending on the individual case and the location of the PSK/RPO. Therefore, it is recommended to visit the Passport Seva website and carefully read the instructions provided for passport renewal.

Four weeks should be enough time to renew your father-in-law's passport in India, but it's best to act quickly to ensure it's processed within that timeframe. Here's the procedure for renewing an expired passport in India:

    Online Application:

    1. Visit the Passport Seva website (Passport Seva, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India).
    2. Click on "Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport".
    3. Select "Re-issue of Passport" and choose the reason for re-issue (expiry).
    4. Fill out the online application form carefully with your father-in-law's details.
    5. Upload scanned copies of the required documents, which typically include:
      • His expired passport (all pages).
      • Proof of address in India (Aadhaar card, utility bill, etc.).
      • Proof of Date of Birth (birth certificate, school leaving certificate).
      • Two recent passport-sized photographs with white background.
    6. Pay the requisite fee online using credit/debit card, net banking, or SBI challan.
    Appointment and Visit:

    1. Once the application is submitted, schedule an appointment at a nearby Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) through the website.
    2. On the appointment date, visit the chosen PSK/POPSK with your father-in-law and the original documents.
    3. The officials will verify the documents, take his fingerprints and photograph (if needed).
    Police Verification:

    • Since his passport expired more than three years ago, fresh police verification might be required. This process is usually initiated by the PSK and can take some time.
    Follow Up and Tracking:

    • You can track the application status online using the application reference number received after submission.
    Important Points:

    • Normal vs. Tatkaal: The standard processing time can vary, but it's generally faster than four weeks. If your travel date is strict, consider applying for Tatkaal (emergency) service for expedited processing at an additional fee.
    • Online Assistance: The Passport Seva website has detailed instructions and FAQs to guide you through the process.
Since you're all currently in India, this process should be manageable. However, keep in mind that unforeseen delays can occur. It's best to initiate the renewal process as soon as possible.
