I am an Indian citizen currently on an extended holiday in the USA. It only came to my attention yesterday that my passport has expired, and I am outside of my native country. I don't know what I should do and what procedure I should follow.

If my Indian passport expired in USA, what do you suggest I should do?

I still have another month until my return flight.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, you cannot renew your Indian passport in the USA if you're only there for a short time. Only legal residents of the US can apply for passport renewal in Indian Embassies in the US. Since you are only on a holiday in the US, it means that you're on a tourist visa and you won't be allowed to renew your passport from there. The same goes for business visa holders where they're only in the US for a short time.

India is actually exempt from the six month rule validity. It means that you can stay in the US as long as the day your passport expires. In your case though, since your passport already expired yesterday, you might encounter problems. It's better to consult with the Consulate or Embassy from where you are. Give them a call and tell them about your situation.

Sorry that I'm not much help but I don't really know of any other solution to your problem except for what I just advised you to do. Good luck though and I hope you would be able to fix this situation. Take care!

You can contact the nearest Indian embassy and can renew it within shorter notice. Visit the Nearest Indian consulate/embassy they will help you out

As briannagodess and sakhil said, the best option would be to contact your nearest Indian Embassy and describe your situation; hopefully they can renew your passport or give you some other procedure to follow before you leave. Otherwise I think there might be a few problems, but hopefully a call with the Embassy will clear those things up. Best of luck.
