    Overview

Chennai is best known for its balance of the old world and the modern world. For the former, just look at its assortment of towering ancient temples, British era buildings and museums showcasing old artifacts. For the latter, it might be harder to find, especially if you just look very superficially. For example, the amusement parks within Chennai are located a bit further from the city centre. These newer and modern world attractions provide for unlimited fun and thrills that everyone in the family can surely appreciate. In this guide, we would highlight the best amusement parks in and around Chennai.

    1. MGM Dizzee World - The MGM Dizzee World is around 34 kilometers to the south of the city centre of Chennai. You can find it in Muttukadu, just an eight-minute walk from the Dakshina Chitra Museum. The amusement park was founded by Chevalier Seva Ratna, the same man who established the MG Muthu (MGM) Group of Companies. MGM Dizzee World was launched in the year 1995 hence it has a bit of an old-fashioned theme park vibe to it. This is more evident in its dry rides section since the water rides section was just added recently. It's just a fun getaway for the little ones, where you can breathe some fresh air, enjoy the company of Humpty Dumpty and more nursery rhymes characters. Its appeal is that it has various sections dedicated for different types of guests. So for the little ones, there's the Mary World, where you would find an assortment of safe rides that they would enjoy. It has classic rides such as Kids Dodgem, their version of the bump cars, Kids Swing, the giant swinging pirate ship, and Mini MGR, their version of the merry-go-round. Special characters also appear in many rides like the Batman Jet which has dragon-like seats or the Jurassic Train which has this fierce tyrannosaurus seats. On the other hand, adults and teens are not left behind on the fun with thrilling attractions like the Rolling Thunder, which is their double loop rollercoaster ride, or the Kamikaze Ranger, their double pendulum ride. Of course families can also enjoy with adorable attractions like the Sky Glider and the Reindeer Coaster. Onto the water rides section, though not as expansive, there's a wave pool and a separate pool with slides. MGM Dizzee World is already a legacy amusement park in Chennai, known by generations and generations of locals for the fun it offers to kids and those that are young at heart.

    2. Kishkinta - Now we go to Kishkinta, famed for being the oldest amusement park of Chennai. Whereas the former amusement park has more of the dry rides, Kishkinta has more of the water rides. You can find Kishkinta to the southeastern side of Chennai, just off the Chennai Outer Ring Road. The Tambaram Railway Station is under eight kilometers away from the amusement park. The best feature of Kishkinta is its extensive covering of trees and plants which makes it a great respite from the city pollution. The water rides section is subdivided into two more areas, the Water Rides and the Water Wars. The Water Rides has an assortment of fun and thrilling wet rides, such as the Water Volcano, a unique mammoth wave creator, and the usual Wave Pool. Of course, you also can't miss the slides that add to the excitement, like the long and winding Tube Slide, or the one for all, all for one, Dome Slide. The Water Wars side has safer enjoyment alternatives for the little ones, like water-sprouting guns and fountains. The dry rides section isn't as satisfying especially for the true blue amusement park lovers. But if you still want that dose of adrenaline rush, try out their Zyclone, their version of a rollercoaster ride which has smaller seat occupancies for that ultimate test of your bravery. If you have kids with you, there are still classic kiddie rides such as the Carousel, Helicopter, Duck Train and Aqua Boat. The amusement park also has a number of artificial lakes with water garnered from rain. You can enjoy a boat ride or even water scootering in some of these lakes.

    3. Queens Land - Queens Land is a newer amusement park, having been established just in 2003 by the company named Rajam Hotels Private Limited. Despite this, the amusement park sports this vintage vibe, with the old-style rides and even old-fashioned boards for them. Queens Land has both a dry rides section and water rides section, though the latter isn't as remarkable. Most visitors flock to the dry rides section which is amazingly well-maintained even if the rides are a bit on the older side. The Cable Car here is a winner for most guests, whereas kids, adults and teens can enjoy all together, as the cabins tour the entire park in a panoramic way. For those who just can't be without their share of thrilling adventures, try out either the Alpen Blitz, the only Anton Schwarzkopf rollercoaster ride in India, or the Free Fall Tower, which is a big drop ride flanked by two arms with cabins on each side. An amusement park won't be complete without attractions for children so keeping that in mind, Queens Land has classic kiddie rides such as the Mini Train, Carousel and Bumper Cars. The water rides section can be divided into two, namely: Swimming Pool and American Wave Pool. The former is just for children and women, it has a number of small slides and a central play area. The latter is just for men, it has a number of tube slides and open slides that they can enjoy. Queens Land offers the cheapest entry fees for an amusement park in Chennai, it even has free entry for children below two feet. You get your money's worth here especially for a fun-filled weekend getaway.

VGP Universal Kingdom Rides (Images from Vgpukd)

    4. VGP Universal Kingdom - Boasting of its own dry rides, water rides, snow park and even a beach is the VGP Universal Kingdom. It is around 20 kilometers to the south of Chennai, close to the VGP Golden Beach Resort. Actually, both ventures were founded by Mr. VG Panneerdas, the owner of the VGP Group of Companies. VGP Universal Kingdom started out as a small picnic area with just some movie sets to keep locals entertained. Over time, it has expanded into a full-pledged amusement park, with additional attractions like a petting zoo and live shows. The amusement park is very lively, especially from the outside with its vibrantly colored entrances and mock guards. Look out inside for the Statue Man, he's there everyday, and try if you can get him to move for that reward offered by the management. The dry rides section can be subdivided into three areas: the Family Rides, the Kid Rides and the Thrill Rides. The Family Rides is comprised of safe but enjoyable attractions like the Ferris Wheel, Wave Swinger, Dashing Car and Tele Combat. The Kid Rides is comprised mini versions of classic rides such as the Mini Pirate Ship, Tiny Tots Express and Water Duck. The Thrill Rides are less varied with a Rollercoaster, Go Kart and Mini Chair-O-Plane to boast of. The water rides has Wave Pool and plenty of new thrilling water slides. You can also visit the on-site snow park and beach for additional charges. VGP Universal Kingdom is a wonderful getaway because it not only exposes you to fun and thrilling rides, it also has this traditional Indian vibe to it due to the number of statues almost taken from Hindu mythology stories.

    Conclusion

While it's not usual for itineraries to include a trip to the amusement parks of a city, why not break out of the norm? This is especially true for those who are quite tired of the usual sightseeing trip, you can enjoy letting go in any of these amusement parks near Chennai. Unfortunately, two other amusement parks in the city, the Dash 'N Splash and Dolphin City & Little Folks have already closed. Still, you get a nice list of options from the guide above, choose one or two, maybe even all of them, for a complete trip to the city of Chennai. Have fun!
